Problem & Context

HealthGuard started as a business collaboration between Garmin and Toyota, with a clear goal: add a health layer to Drive+ Link, Toyota's connected vehicle platform embedded in 200K+ vehicles across Taiwan.

The core constraint was data. Real-time health API access was cost-prohibitive, which meant displaying live heart rate or stress levels during a drive was off the table. We had to design something meaningful within the boundaries of periodic sync and manual refresh.

This shifted the design question from "what data can we show" to "what data actually matters to someone before, during, or after a drive.”
